Christmas Miracles

So many of you prayed and hoped that I would be able to enjoy Christmas this year with my family. You also prayed that I would be able to eat again. I believe the Lord rewarded your prayers, hearts’ desires, and faith, because I’ve had four wonderful days in a row!

Saturday was a difficult day in that I was not able to get out of bed until late evening. However, it was a good day in that I had many hours of peaceful sleep. After resting again on Sunday morning, I was able to wake up in time to help Mom with last-minute preparations before family and friends arrived, starting at 5:30pm. Sunday evening, our home was filled with laughter, singing, meaningful conversations, scripture reading and joyful tears. Except for a brief nap while everyone ate supper, I was on my feet the entire time Sunday night. I even assisted Mom with the cleaning after the company left! I went to bed Sunday grateful for a wonderful evening, but still having a cautious attitude knowing that my body may not be up to another full day of celebrations.

Well, after sleeping the entire night without pain medication, I woke up yesterday morning refreshed. I even surprised my grandparents at the breakfast table with my presence, since I had already said goodbye to them the night before in case I wasn’t able to get up in time to see them leave. Monday was a leisure and fun day. I was able to play with Qavah while Mom and Dad did some last-minute errands. Then, last night we had our immediate family Christmas. This time, I not only joined everyone at supper, but I also ate some of the scrumptious food! Then, we opened gifts. Fortunately, Colin has a video camera, so we were able to capture Qavah’s first Christmas with her “forever family”. As with Sunday night, my health stabilized enough for me to stay with everyone throughout the entire evening’s festivities! And finally, today has been another “near-normal” day. We had breakfast this morning as a family, before Colin, Jenn and Annelise had to leave and Paul Burton had to go to work.

Regular readers of this website will know how quickly my health changes. Therefore, my family has learned over the past seventeen months to enjoy the “good” days to the fullest. However, it is rare that I’ve had four absolutely wonderful days with minimal or no pain, no spasms, and no electrolyte imbalance issues. Today, I’m rejoicing that I had the opportunity to truly celebrate the Saviour’s birth with friends and family, instead of imagining the events from my bedroom.

Many pleasurable memories were created over the last four days and soon, I will post pictures to show you the Christmas miracles of 2007. However, for now, I want to close with the lyrics of one of my favorite Holiday songs. The birth of Jesus was only the prelude to God’s symphony of human redemption and eternal salvation. This song captures the essence of Christ and His ministry, which began as a tiny baby wrapped in swalding clothes in a little town called Bethlehem.
He Made a Way in a Manger (Integrity Music)

Longing for a savior
A hopeless world would wait
Sin demanded justice
At a price we could not pay
But God displayed his mercy
The greatest gift of love
When we could not reach heaven
Heaven came to us

He made a way in a manger
A way to the cross
Messiah the promised
Before time had begun
For God so loved this world
Though he knew what love would cost
He made a way in a manger
To make a way to the cross

In Bethlehem a stable
Became a throne of grace
As God himself our Savior
Drew near to take our place
His mother smiled in wonder
As shepherds stood in awe
The sacrifice of heaven
Lay sleeping in the straw

He is the life that died our death
The precious Lord Jesus
Laid down his sweet head

He made a way in a manger
A way to the cross
Messiah the promised
Before time had begun
For God so loved this world
Though he knew what love would cost
He made a way in a manger
To make a way to the cross

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay

  6. Lillian Oliveira Says:

Katy, my heart’s prayer for many weeks has been that God would give you better days at Christmas to celebrate His birth! I am so glad so many others were joining me in that prayer and that Jesus has granted it! I’m sure the family times have been very wonderful, and especially the devotional times when everyone could take part with sincere devotion to the Lord God we love and serve. May the year ahead be one of many victories and successes - in your health and in the spiritual realm! I have a couple of picturesque Christmas memories I’ll share with you later. Love, Aunt Lil

  7. Lael Moreland Says:

Katy!!! What an enormous blessing! Praise the Lord!! My heart is so joyful right now for you. I can only imagine how wonderfully exciting it must have been for you to be a part of the celebrations. And to see Qavah enjoy it as well. That must have been so much fun!
I am having a wonderful time over here in Norfolk with the family. It has been a nice time to sleep in, rest, and forget about work and school. And of course it is always entertaining to watch the kids open their gifts Christmas morning. They are currently running around in their night clothes at 12:00 in the afternoon playing with their new toys.
I hope to see you when I get back in town. I pray that your good health would continue, and praise God for the blessings He has given already.
    Love you Katy!

    Hey Katy!
I’m so thankful for these amazing days! It really is a gift from the Lord. I know how you have longed to have a pain free Christmas - where you could participate, enjoy the preperations and festivities surrounding Jesus’ birthday. What a blessing! I’m so happy for you - because I know how much you wanted that and because I know you truely will cherish these memories and they will sustain you in the months to come! :)

We had a wonderful Christmas as well! I could totally relate to your mom’s comments about Qavah singing Happy Birthday as she was washing her hands. Noah and Lydia randomly break into the birthday song while playing with a new toy. We had a cake for Jesus and the kids made Him birthday cards. Noah wanted to know if he could take his to Jesus up in heaven and we said “not yet, but He knows all about your card and he loves it”….to which Noah replied “Mom, I really want to take it to him”….When I asked him why he said “Because I love him and he takes my sins”…it made me cry! I’m so thankful this year for the innocence of children - who help us see things through their eyes - with a newness and sense of wonder!

We love you Katy and are so thankful for your good days!

Christmas Preparations

I’ve been trying to keep busy with Christmas preparations. I have many gifts to wrap, photos to go through, and some other details to finish before December 24. As I wrap each gift, I have fun imagining the recipient opening the gift. What is significant to me, even more than the gift itself, is that I hope my family member or friend knows how much I love them. I hope the specifically-geared gift will let them know that I was thinking of them personally when shopping for or wrapping their gift.

These Christmas preparations, in a small way, are keeping my mind active and helping me to “forget” about the intense physical pain I’m experiencing right now. It’s also reminding me that life is not all about me; There are many people in this world that need encouragement and love. Below is today’s verse from the Turning Point (Dr. David Jeremiah) devotional. I needed its reminder, so may it be a blessing to you as well:

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” -2 Corinthians 4:17

    Hey Katy-
I’m so proud of you. I know you are in pain and it must be so hard - but you just keep going and serving. It really is such a great example for me! Thank you for the practical ways you show us how to live by faith!

    Love you sister Katy!

Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!

“Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has [a] quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” -Psalm 127:4-5

Last week, I reinstalled a photo program associated with Google called Picasa2. Since then, I’ve been playing around with the web albums feature. I cannot guarantee all of the kinks are fixed, but hopefully the albums will work this time.

On Sunday, November 25, my niece Annelise celebrated her first Birthday. So, I decided to have my album experiment be a photo collage of the first year of her life here in Virginia. Click on the link below to watch the slide show. You can also manually scroll through the pictures. I’ve also included this album under my Photo page.

A Year in the Life of: Annelise Katherine Campbell

This past Friday, my grandparents celebrated their wedding anniversary (Paul and Lucile Campbell). I remember last year, we wondered if Annelise would be born on their 60th wedding anniversary, since that date was near Jenn’s original due date. Instead, Annelise arrived early enough that she could “visit” with her great-grandparents when they came to Roanoke for their anniversary celebration a few days after her birth.

I guess I’ll have to re-add my comment about running across an old Christmas letter from Paul and Lucile. It was from the year Savannah was 5. In it was the statement “Lucile misses babies.” Now she has another baby to lavish love on, and quite close at hand, too.

  2. Alicia Richardson Says:

The pics of annelise are adorable. ttyl hope you feel better soon

  3. Doris Harriff Says:

Lois and George were married 3 days before Paul and Lucile, 1 day before her birthday. She once told Mom, “Don’t you dare let me get married one day before my 22nd birthday.” And that was exactly what she did - get married one day before her 22nd birthday. She was married secretly, because married students were not allowed where she was going to school (Seattle Pacific). I don’t know if it was the entire college, or just her department (nursing). But she missed George so much (he was in Michigan) that she finally confessed to her superior, and quit school and went to be with him.

  4. Karen Tillman Says:

    Hi Katy,
Boy, those babies seem to grow so fast don’t they? Everytime I see baby pictures it makes me remember when Holly was born, and it seems like yesterday. And now, m baby is off to college, trying to make a life in this big world!!!
    Love and prayers,

I have not written recently. I apologize, because I have certainly been enjoying your comments! I hope you will revisit posts, so you can read and be blessed by everyone’s comments.

Below is a fun picture for your enjoyment. Thanks to Colin for sending this forward to Mom and me via email. I’m not sure who sent it to him, but it’s cute!

That’s funny! I’m glad you’re up and online! Happy T-day!

  4. Jennifer Blugerman Says:

The summer before my Freshman year at Roanoke College, I worked for a biology professor there, transcribing his manuscripts onto the computer. One of his lab assistants, a graduate student named Noel, had a pet baby skunk that he brought with him each day. He called it “Puppy” because he said that he always wanted a dog, but look what he got stuck with! As it turns out, his Grandfather had been bushhogging some land and ran over a skunk nest, killing the mother and all of the babys, except one which he gave to Noel.

Puppy would run around the lab while he worked, and sometimes Noel would bring it into my office for me to “skunk sit” for him. It was very much like a kitten in its behavior — playful, affectionate, and very cute!! Noel never had a problem with Puppy spraying him, until one day when Puppy was wrestling with Noel’s toes (he wore flip flops in the lab), and Noel flicked him off his foot. I guess he flicked too hard, because Puppy let him have it!!! Fortunately, being in the science building, Noel dashed up to the chemistry department and procured a large bottle of citric acid and commenced wiping everything down, including himself!

Needless to say, Noel made a hasty trip to the Vet soon after to have Puppy “fixed”! So…. about that picture. I totally believe that it could be a true photo and not a fake. Baby skunks are extremely friendly and do behave much like kittens. Noel even trained his to use a litter box! Just don’t wait too long to have them fixed if you decide to make a pet out of one!! And, they are good climbers! Noel eventually had to stop bringing Puppy to work because he had learned how to climb the drawer pulls like ladder rungs to get on top of the lab surfaces!

Well, that was my first job. Definately more interesting than waiting tables! ;-)

Remicade Day

Today’s Remicade treatment was successful! This morning, it was a struggle to eat breakfast. The pain made me cry. However, three hours into the treatment this afternoon, I was eating a bagel and cream cheese from the hospital cafeteria. Tonight, I had noodles and Mexican wrap for dinner. I do not understand how the Remicade works in my body, but I am so thankful it does. I’m thankful my body can tolerate the procedure.

There was a mix-up with the doctor’s orders, so we had to wait two hours before the nurse could even start the Remicade procedure. Mom, Qavah, and I made the most of the time. Of course, I got my pedicure. Qavah enjoyed looking at magazines and taking short walks with Mom. She even got to see her transfusion doctor. Paul Burton also visited us; he had Qavah giggling within minutes. Around 4:00pm, Dad came over to the hospital. Mom took Qavah home, while Dad stayed with me. He read me a chapter I had to complete for my Mass Media Law class. We had a great time together with the conversation being downright fun and lively (at least I thought so- the nurse didn’t think the subject matter sounded very interesting)!

Was thinking of you when I woke up this morning, and thanking God that your Remicade day had come to relieve your suffering at last!

You and your sissy are so cute together.:-)

  2. Aunt Lil Says:

Katy, I think we all heave a great sigh of relief when your Remicaide med kicks in and you can eat and feel like a human being again. Thank God that He designed this world with things that make the medicines we need! And the world is full of them, many yet to be discovered, I’m sure. I hope they find some new things trying to give you and Quavah relief. I believe God reveals these things to scientists who are intensely searching for answers.

I’m hoping that the lice problem is soon behind you, too! Oh, dear. I’m reminded of once when your Uncle Tommy - a guy with a really comical tongue at times, got some chicken lice in his hair after cleaning the chicken coop. He said that it felt like the lice would stand on their hind legs and wiggle a hair - a dreadfully ticklish sensation! I guess its better to laugh about it than to cry! May the Good Lord deliver you all! Love, Aunt Lil

  3. Karen Tillman Says:

Glad to see you held it together, and am so glad that you can eat again for awhile anyway!!! Nothing like being on prednisone and not being able to EAT!!!! UGH!!! You guys are just to cute.
    Love and payers always

    Hey Katy!
I love the pictures - thank you for being so faithful to update and let us all know what’s going on! I’m so glad that the remicade has kicked in - it’s such a huge blessing - I agree with Aunt Lil - I think we all heave a sigh of relief when we know that Remicade Day has arrived and done it’s work. I ran into your mom yesterday at Food Lion - it’s always so fun to bump into someone especially when you get to have an update early! :) She is such an encouragement to me!

    We love ya’ll!

Wednesday

I’m sorry I have not updated in awhile. It’s been a crazy week! I don’t feel that good health-wise tonight. I’m thankful Monday is Remicade Day. The Lord has been gracious in that He’s protecting my body this week. I’ve been able to keep going, but with each passing day, the effort is greater and harder.

Can I say I really dislike lice? I’ve never been a fan of bugs, even though I enjoyed Science class growing up. Now, I have one more creature to add to my “hope I never see again” list.

I switched my clothes from Spring/Summer to Fall/Winter today. I kept a few favorite summer outfits out, because I’m sure we’ll still have warm days. I prefer warm weather, so I am always a bit disappointed when I get out the sweaters, turtle necks, and heavy skirts. The clothing switch is much more fun in the Spring!

I’ve added two new pictures of Qavah on the Photos page. I was going to make this post a Wordless Wednesday and display the pictures here, but I decided to write an update instead. In the first picture, the dress Qavah is wearing is just precious! It has little girls and puppy dogs on it. When I first saw it, I thought of Beatrix Potter. Then, I thought of the song, “These Are A Few of My Favorite Things”.

I think anything with more than 4 legs gets put on the ‘hope I never see again’ list….I’m sooo not a fan of creepy crawlers! I think her new hairdo is really fun - not many can pull it off…she does the ‘Demi Moore look’ well! :)

    Love ya!

  2. Aunt Lil Says:

Katy dear, I’m back - from travels and guests - checked in to read while in Idaho, but this is the first I’ve seen the LICE stories! OH MY GOODNESS! I hope they are behind for good. We never had lice that I remember of, but I do remember having bed bugs, contracted from some one at school, likely. Your Aunt Doris would remember. She remembers everything! A phenomenal mind. Anyway, we had to burn an 8 hour candle in the house and close it up and stay away all day. Its the only time I remember our whole family taking an all-day off vacation on the farm! Mama packed a lot of food and we all carried something I’m sure. We trekked up through the little woods on “Thompson’s Hill” to the east of our house, and near the top where the woods run out, we camped out and played and picnic’d the whole day! There was a big patch of low growing, soft curly “wire-grass” as a playground and a big patch of teaberry plants - they get little red berries and the young leaves are delicious, too. They are what is used for “wintergreen” flavoring in tooth-paste and pink candy lozenges that Daddy loved. There was a little spring coming out of the side of the hill just below the wiry grass, and a few large maples and lots of young trees for shade. I may have been about 10 years old. That precious day in my memories was the great good out of our bed bug episode! (A little aside about Uncle Tony: He wasn’t familiar with teaberry plants, and I found one at a nursery and brought it home and planted it for old-times’ sake. It finally grew some berries, and I picked one and gave it to him to eat. He chewed a couple of times and the spit it out!! saying “It tastes like toothpaste!” I laughed a lot and said “No, toothpaste tastes like teaberries!”) That’s why I love Pepsodent original, it’s teaberry flavor :-) Hope this little story gives a lift to these difficult just-before-Remicaide-days. Love much, Aunt Lil

  3. Heather Kirkwood Says:

Hey Katy, glad you’re hanging in there. I got your e-mail - just haven’t had the energy to respond to an ever growing pile of e-mails. But I will respond. Hopefully tonight I can update the blog and explain some of what’s been going on this week. I’m a little loopy though……just really tired.

  4. Doris Harriff Says:

About the bedbugs Lily mentioned - we got them in the mattress of a bed we bought at an auction. I remember burning the mattress, and the formaldehyde candle! Daddy didn’t go on the picnic, he was working in the fields all day, and took his lunch with him.

Miracles Abound Everywhere

I’m about to go to bed, but it feels oh-so-good to be home! Our home is filled with peace tonight. Even unspeakable peace…it’s just powerful and all-consuming. We can feel the Lord’s presence here and how different it is tonight than Wednesday and Thursday. Dad, Mom and I just finished a time of raising our voices in praise for all the Lord has done this week.

We got home around 3:00pm and this evening has been one of those times I want to pinch myself to see if it’s all real. Mom cleaned the house last night, so everything feels fresh and lovely. She even washed my sheets! I read to Qavah tonight while she was taking her bath. She was filled with compassion at the hospital today and joy tonight in being home playing with me. I just scarfed down a warm sunny-bun filled with blueberry cream cheese that Mom has dubbed the Shenandoah Valley Donut (incidentally, I enjoyed a Bavarian cream donut last night at the hospital when Dad got donuts as a treat). I do have to say Mom’s snack is delicious and really does taste like something you’d find at Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme. Be sure to visit our Campbell Cafe for a sample.

Every time we go to the hospital, the Lord always gives us an opportunity to minister to someone or be ministered by someone. The nurses last night on the Oncology and Hematology floor were excellent. They were quiet, but attentive (Rehab 3). They also remembered and were overjoyed to see Paul Burton, since he used to work on that unit. In the course of our talking together with two of the nurses, Mom said “Well, all things do work together for good”. One of the nurses piped up, replying, “Yes it does when you believe Romans 8:28″! We were able to have a meaningful and blessed prayer time with this nurse before she ended her shift. These are the events and “small miracles” from the Lord that keep me going when the physical pain becomes unbearable.

Below is a picture I took the other night of a sunset. It’s not the most amazing picture, but the peace I feel tonight is displayed in this photo.

    Katy,
There’s nothing like being back in your own bed & clean sheets are the best. You know, there are probably millions of blogs out there, some not worth 2 cents, but yours is fantastic. I can’td go to bed at night until I’ve checked for a new post. Wouldn’t it be great to also read the stories of those whose lives hae been blessed by your story? Perhaps in Heaven we will.

I am so glad that you are feeling better, and pray that God will continue to give you wisdom durig this time of transition with doctors. Btw…I love the picture that you took!!
Take care and again glad you are doing soooo well.

  4. Aunt Lil Says:

Dearest Katy - how wonderful to read that you were experiencing that “peace of God that passes all understanding” when you got home! How well I know that peace, that comes after a great trial, and sometimes, by God’s amazing grace, right in the middle of one… I don’t know how people live without Him. Your sunset of peace is lovely. It reminds me of a slide I have from Zaire, high on the mountain top close to the “Heidi cabin”. (I am now in my friend Helen’s home, in Idaho. It was she and husband Al who took me up there and retrieved me) I got a few rare relief days when another missionary nurse came to help. It was when we were still having some cholera cases and many others things, and no doctor… It was heaven to be there alone, above many of the clouds, and I took a blanket out to a grassy field. Lying there in the sunny warmth, I took a picture of a blue sky with fluffy clouds, the lush grass and a single large perfect brilliant red “paint=brush” stalk in the middle. I call the picture “Serenity”. That is the feeling in your home.

I am so glad you are better, and home - I’d read the blog here yesterday and we talked and prayed for you. Love, Aunt Lil

Visiting Grandparents

Yesterday, my family visited my grandparents in Fishersville. I wanted to attend, but as soon I woke up in the morning, I knew that wasn’t going to be possible. It was an HPS flare-up day and thus I spent most of yesterday in bed. I still find it discouraging and disappointing to alter my plans, especially when they involve family visits. However, our friend Linda stayed with me until everyone got home, so that made me feel better. Below are a few pictures Mom took of yesterday’s visit.

  1. Aunt Lil Says:

I think Grandaddy is just reading a book, as always!! Thanks for sharing these, Katy, and so very sorry you didn’t get to go along. I can imagine your disappointment, and how I pray that Jesus will guide the doctors to know what they should do. I can’t imagine what it is like to go back to these symptoms over and over, I know that you feel Jesus’ presence with you, and know you just keep on clinging to Him, our refuge and fortress, our God, in Whom we trust. Love, Aunt Lil

  2. Jenice Pearl Says:

    Katy,
What a blessing it was to visit with you today after worship! I was twice blessed in meeting Qavah there. She sparkles that one! May you continue to feel well. I look forward to seeing you Thursday night.

  3. Jess Says:

I love the new pictures! They are so fun! Thanks for sharing them. I’m sorry that you didn’t get to go on the outing - I’m amazed by your resiliency. I know it must get discuraging for you to alter your plans but like your mom has posted before - the Lord really has given you a joyful spirit! I enjoyed visiting with you for a few minutes this evening and I look forward to more Sundays when we can chat! Noah was so cute when we got home - he wanted to tell Daddy everything that went on! I’m sure Qavah was the same way!
    Love ya!

Delights of a Sister

I’m trying to update more often on my site, since I told Mom yesterday that I wanted the Medical Update’s section to stick to mostly medical-related updates and issues, rather than “Qavah” stories. It has been one full week and the week is not over yet! I am finding that I’m wanting or needing to be with Qavah so much that my schoolwork is a bit neglected. When we are babysitting Annelise, it takes both Mom and me to watch the girls. Fortunately, I was able to get some paperwork accomplished last night and this morning on the way to my doctor’s appointment. I’m also going to do some tonight, now that Qavah is sleeping.

We’ve had several doctor appointments this week and that always throws off the routine. I expect I’ll get into the “groove” eventually and everything will even out in the end. I’m thankful I’m only taking six credits this semester and that I’m almost done. I praise the Lord I did not have these HPS flare ups and issues when I was just beginning college.

The failed Prednisone taper was a source of frustration this week. I feel the adverse side affects of that drug everyday. All of my doctors tell me I need to be off of it. And yet, my body seems to crave it like candy. My primary care physician, (PCP), whom I visited today, agrees that we may need to increase the Imuran dosage while I’m trying to taper the Prednisone. Fortunately, the PCP offered to talk with my endocrinologist and gastroenterologist himself to figure out another plan of action. I’m so grateful, because sometimes I get very weary trying to manage my own care with the medical community.

The PCP also took extra blood work today, so he can begin observing vitamin levels with my malobsorption issues. Qavah watched me get “stuck” today and I think it helped her emotionally. At least, when my doctor’s appointment was finished, Qavah was extra joyful…I think she was just thankful she wasn’t the one being poked and prodded today!

It has been delightful to watch and play with Qavah. I’m learning patience and how to be silly, all at the same time. Qavah is always interested in helping me around the house. So, I am teaching her how to unload the silverware tray from the dishwasher. She doesn’t exactly get the hang of “big” and “small” spoons, but she actually does quite well with the sorting.

I’ve been trying to do about an hour of school with Qavah a day. This week, we are working on the letter “A” and color “red”. I’m constantly amazed at Qavah’s thinking patterns, interests, and requests. She just mesmerizes me!

I’m also getting a new realization of how much the Heavenly Father must enjoy watching us as I observe my little sister. Earlier this week, we were playing “house” together. Qavah was holding her baby doll and, all of the sudden, she started leaving her bedroom, so I asked her where she was going. Qavah didn’t answer, so I followed her to the bathroom. She had undressed her doll and gotten a wet washcloth from the shower to clean her “baby”. Qavah was very gentle and thorough. I didn’t tell her to clean her baby, but at four years old, she was already displaying love and careful attention to detail.

Comments:
  1. Aunt Lil Says:

Katy, I believe Jesus will need to give you some miracle help to get your adrenals back, and that’s been my prayer for some time. But you need to try all the medical avenues, and I hope this team really gets to work on planning your program so you don’t have that undue burden.

This is a sweetheart of a letter as you give us a look at your interaction with your little sister. May the blessings of joy continue! Love, Aunt Lil

  2. Trisha Ferris Says:

Qavah is very blessed to have you, Katy, a sister who notices even the little positives in her behavior. She will grow up knowing she has value & being able to appreciate even the smallest gift from God. This is part of what God meant when He told you He had work for you yet to do.
    Trisha

  3. Heather Kirkwood Says:

    Hey Katy,
I’m so sorry to hear about the steroid issue - I know how frustrating that can be! I’ve had a tough week so I haven’t been able to check in as much as usual, but reading about you and Quavah puts a smile on my face!

Birthday Celebration

Last year, I spent my Birthday in the guest room on TPN. I couldn’t eat and I had to sleep in between surprise visits from friends. This year’s celebration was very different! We had a family party with ginger noodles, carrot cake, and Aunt Julie visiting. Thank you for the emails, cards, and well-wishes. I had a fun day!

Several weeks ago, Mom asked me what I wanted for my Birthday. I replied, “My sister!” So, in addition to actually having Qavah here, I also received a charm from my new sister that says, “Little sister”. :-) Below are a few pictures from the celebration.

May the Lord Jesus give you a blessed, much more healthy year ahead. And I pray that the prednisone decrease will go well and that you will be able to complete it. I am so thankfor for this much more SENSIBLE plan for reduction!

Hi Katy and Family. Qavah is so beautiful! Your family is such a blessing to me and I can’t wait to follow Qavah’s journey in the days ahead. Yes, she needs her own page so we can see more pictures. What a beautiful smile!!!

  2. Doris Harriff Says:

Looks like Qavah is very happy with her new family! But, oh, those skinny little arms - so noticable in the picture where she is hugging Mommy. I guess it’s what Lily said, probably a factor in the disease she has.

  3. Fairlight Says:

Oh, what a BEAUTIFUL smile she has! She is so precious. Thank you for sharing all the pictures…and welcome home, Qavah!

  4. Aunt Lil Says:

Katy, both you and Qavah look RADIANT! Blessings on your new sisterhood! Love, Aunt Lil

  5. Karen Tillman Says:

    Hey Katy,

Anticipation

Last night, we began our new semester of small group. It was a blessing to meet again. Dad did a wonderful and meaningful job with the Bible study, based on Acts 9 with Ananias’ obedience and Saul’s conversion. The title of the study was, “What is required to follow Christ?” I always love Dad’s teaching; God has certainly given him a gift. The meal, prepared by Mom and some of the other members, was delicious as well.

Do you ever wait and anticipate for something so long that when it actually happens, you almost don’t know what to think or say? That is what it happening with my parents’ traveling to get Qavah this week. I’ve dreamed of this week for months. I’ve prayed about the details ever since we began this adoption. Now, the time is here and I don’t know what to write! Everything feels almost surreal…like I’m in a movie that’s playing in slow motion. I’m just thankful we don’t have to wait any longer. I know the transition won’t be easy, especially for Qavah, but I also know this is God’s plan. I have confidence He is going to work everything out, continue to grow our faith, and amaze us all with the process!

Requirements to Following Christ (Bible Study Outline):

1. Totally depend on the Lord

2. Wait on the Lord’s timing

3. Communication

God calls us for a very specific purpose and work. We need to be in constant communication with Him. In addition, we should see if the Lord has has reconfirmed the commandment. Finally, the commandments or plans the Lord gives us to do will always be consistent with His character and Biblical teachings.

4. Recognize God’s authority over your life

5. Obey (In the end, Ananias obeyed whole-heartily.)

Comments:
  1. Sandy Says:

I have definitely waited in anticipation for big events and then hardly know what to say when when they happen! This is such an awesome week for your family! God’s peace to all of you.

  2. Julie Says:

Katy, you all will be making adjustments and that is totally normal. But Qavah, just wait and see how she will adjust. Kids are so resilient and adaptable. And, she is at a very good age to make an excellent adjustment. I wish all the best for you and your family and look forward to hearing the many many stories you will share with us.

  3. Aunt Lil Says:

I missed this until today, Katy! Great Bible Study for me… wait for God’s timing! Yes, that’s what I’m doing. Love you much, Aunt Lil

  4. Carrie Thompson Says:

    Hi Katy,
I missed this until today, too! Great outline of the Bible Study. Thanks for sharing. I’m looking forward to seeing ya’ll in Church tomorrow, Lord willing.
    Love,

Tuesday Night

It’s been a busy, but wonderful day! Mom babysat Annelise at Colin’s house until 3:00pm, so I was home alone for a good part of the day.
Aunt Julie stopped by for a short visit on her way home from Bible study. It was so good to see her! I enjoyed having her as a “bed buddy” in the hospital, but I think it’s safe to say we both prefer seeing each other outside of Roanoke Memorial! I also had a half hour piano lesson. That was really fun, because I’m beginning to read notes. My lessons are always very relaxed, but at the same time, I am learning. More importantly, I’m enjoying the process.

The later part of this afternoon and tonight was spent working on my Jamaica album. I actually finished all of the scrapbooking! Now, I need to go back and journal the pages. I can’t believe it took me a year to complete just one album, but I’ve had so much fun doing it. The colors are bright and cheerful. I think I was really able to capture the essence of my two mission trips. The entire time I scrapbooked, I felt the joy of the Lord. Someday, I look forward to seeing the Christian Jamaicans in Heaven.

Speaking of “someday,” Mom and I finished another week of Bible study tonight. I shouldn’t be amazed at what I’m learning in Daniel, because God is who He says He is and will do what He says He will do. However, what is stated in chapters 7 (especially) and 8, as Beth Moore said, “were prophecy to Daniel but history to us”. The four world empires I studied in Western Civilization at Virginia Western several years ago were prophesied in Daniel 7 and the empires existed just as the Lord said they would. What gets me really excited is how precise God is…it makes me look forward to, with renewed fervor, the time when Christ will reappear. I alluded to Ephesians 6 and the Armor of God on the Medical Updates’ section and I included verse 17 there. However, I want to include the entire section below.

The Armor of God

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” -Ephesians 6:10-17.

Comments:
  1. Aunt Lil Says:

Wow, Katy, I missed this one! and a great one, too. I try remember to “pray on” the armor every morning. I believe it gives me both protection from the enemy and power to make effective the “Sword of the Spirit” whenever I find an opportunity to use it. Keep up the Walk! Love, Aunt Lil

  2. Laura Griffith Says:

Would love to see your scrapbooks :) I’m seeing all kinds of bright colors. At least you have one finished, I’ve been working on Lorien’s “baby book” and have only gotten to her first few months of life. I’m so slow at it. Maybe I can get some inspiration from yours. Qavah will be blessed to have you as a sister :)

Misc. and Website Housekeeping

It has been two weeks and two days since I began Imuran. The difference in my body is amazing! The transformation from before Imuran to how I feel now is even surprising me. I’m so thankful. I began the drug August 1, almost to-the-day I entered the hospital the second time last year (after the appendectomy). I remember on one of my first posts on this website, I asked if I would ever be able to really “live life,” again instead of merely observing it. These past two weeks are evidence that I am able to enjoy life again. Life will be forever changed and different (my daily medications’ box is testimony of that), but it is still pleasant and filled with surprises, joys, and God’s goodness.

Here are several random “newsworthy” musings:

1. Yesterday, I finished Constitutional Law I! As I told a friend last night, to most people this would just seem like finishing another course. But to me, completely C.L. is significant, because I began this course last summer, several months before the initial hospital stay and HPS diagnosis. As my friend said, “What an end to a book-filled [meaning eventful] year.” I want to thank my instructor- who is a reader of this website- for her patience and support over this past year. She was pleased with my final assignment and I received an A for the course. To God be the glory!

2. Sandy asked me to post my academic plans for Fall. Knowing that they can change at any time, I am planning to finish my final two Mary Baldwin College courses, so I can graduate in December. These course are Media Law & Ethics and Senior Thesis. I have to write a 30+ page senior thesis with the topic yet to be determined. I’ll keep you posted.

3. I realized that several previous posts where pictures had been posted no longer existed. One example is the post from August 21, 2006 titled “CELEBRATE” under Medical Updates. On this post, I described Granddaddy’s Birthday party. Well, I have now posted pictures here, on the Photos-menu of Katy’s Musings.

4. I have updated the Literati page of Katy’s Musings with a website recommendation and book review.

Comments:
  1. Sandy Says:

Praise God for these good days and quite a turn around from when I first started to know you last year! You’ve come a long way. I look forward to hearing about your classes! Writing a thesis can be a crazy journey all by itself, so just enjoy the ride. :)

  2. Mike Theesfield Says:

    Hi, Katy!
I well remember the comments in which you wondered if you would really live life again; they’re what inspired me to start posting here.

An A for a conservative in Constitutional Law? Your college must be a conservaticve one! It seems to me that the all-too-typical liberal colleges teach that the Constitution means just about everything except for what it says!

Liberal College: The 2nd Amendment actually provides for the existance of the National Guard, rather than individual rights.

Me (with tongue lodged firmly in cheek): Well, of course! I should have realized that the word “people” in the 2nd Amendment is synonymous with “National Guard”! How wise our Founding Fathers were to ensure our individual rights by giving the government the right to arm a National Guard…

Liberal College: The 1st Amendment stipulates the separation of Church and State.

Me (T-in-C): Yes! The words “separation of Church and State” are right there in the 1st Amendment, right where it says- uh- well, anyway, I always knew that those evil Ten Commandment plaques in the courthouses and those nasty school prayers happened because of laws made by Congress!…

Liberal College: Federal social programs are Constitutional and necessary.

Me (T-in-C): Well, OBVIOUSLY the 10th Amendment stipulation that “those powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people” was intended by the Founding Fathers to apply only when there was public consensus on a Tuesday night with everyone hopping up and down on one leg while whistling the theme to “Green Acres” with the windshield wipers running, unless vetoed by Nancy Pelosi…

I could go on, but I’m sure many people (National Guardsmen, of course!) would tell me that this is quite enough!

    Hugs and donuts, hon!

Katy, Congratulations “mille fois” - a thousand times! for the course completion and the A. That is a most remarkable achievement - an honor not only for you, but for the Lord, not to mention your proud family!

You know, I just went back and listened to that wonderful children’s choir at the end of the April 8th entry here - it is SO inspiring, I would like to try to find that video and buy it. Anyway, I tried to enlarge the screen with the children singing, and I ended up with a second screen and the same choir singing on top of the first one, and it was glorious! Like a round! Hearing one part sung in background and another in foreground. You should try it! Do you have any idea how to get a copy of that?

    Love, Aunt Lil

Congratulations!! I know that amazing feeling of finishing up a semester, but for a class that has taken you so long to make it through — I’m sure the blessing is tenfold what it would normally have been!
